South Superstar Rajnikanth to be awarded with Dadasaheb Phalke Award

India's Information and Broadcasting minister Prakash Jawadekar announced on twitter.

Minister Jawadekar said, " Happy to announce #Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema Rajnikanth.

His contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter has been iconic."

Prime minister Narendra Modi also Congratulated Thalaiva for award.


Rajanikanth born as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad to Marathi speaking family in Bangalore in 1950. He was named after Maratha king Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Rajnikanth studied in Acharya Pathasala Public School , After finishing school he worked several jobs including coolie and Conductor at Bangalore Transport Service soon to join Madras Film Institute after seen an advertise. He soon learned to speak Tamil. He met K. Balachander at Madras Film school.

Rajnikanth began his film career with the Tamil film Apoorva Raagangal (1975), directed by K. Balachander then soon rose to fame for his unique acting style.

Rajanikanth was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 2000 and Padma Vibhushan in 2016. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in cinema

His film Sivaji the Boss was third Indian film to cross RS 100 Cr mark.
